In the Department of Forensic Sciences, small teams of faculty members and students pursue research that shapes law enforcement at every level and helps develop the next set of forensic sciences standards. From studying chemicals to identifying unknown materials found at a crime scene to developing theories based on molecular biological evidence, our researchers make an impact.
Students often collaborate on research projects, bringing insights from disparate studies to formulate new methodologies. With access to a large full-time faculty, students are in close proximity to industry leaders and thinkers. Many students present their research to the scientific world through mentorship opportunities.

Laboratories
The Forensic Sciences Department houses state-of-the-art laboratory facilities on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The mass spectrometry lab hosts six research instruments, including GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, LC-TOF MS, LC-Orbitrap, tandem LC-MS and CE-MS. The teaching and research lab has an FTIR spectrometer with ATR and micro-FTIR capabilities; it also has PLM microscopes and comparison microscopes for trace evidence analysis.
Students may reserve time in laboratory facilities to work on assignments and independent research projects.
Eckles Library
Eckles Library houses forensic literature for the university, including a wide range of forensic science print and online research materials. It is located on the quad of Mount Vernon Campus and is dedicated to serving the information needs of all GW students, faculty and staff.
